You are invited into a meeting with leaders two levels above you. The topic is familiar, but you are not the formal decision-maker. In the first few minutes, what most often happens inside you?

I become highly aware of how I am being judged and wait until I can make a nearly perfect contribution. I listen for the decision the room needs, locate where my perspective adds value, and enter without needing to prove myself. I speak early and at length so my expertise is established before the room moves on. I contribute when asked, but later realise I withheld a point that could have changed the discussion.

Communication is not complete when information is delivered. It is complete when understanding and movement become possible.

In a tense conversation, the other person becomes defensive. What happens next?

I repeat my reasoning more firmly so they understand the facts. I lower the tension by abandoning part of what needed to be said. I acknowledge what is happening, remain connected to the purpose, and change how I am entering the conversation. I stay polite and complete the conversation, but the real issue remains unresolved.

I understood the subject but had not decided the central message before speaking. I assumed the sequence was clear because it was clear in my own mind.
